‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 7, episode 9 reaction: Show boss on Stefan – Damon twist
The winter finale of “The Vampire Diaries” did not bring much merriment to Stefan and Damon Salvatore. As a matter of fact, it catapulted the two characters to what is effectively a unique version of hell for each one of them. They’re in some ways in the past, but also feeling the effects of the phoenix stone and in their own little universe. The obvious connections to Damon in 1994 are supposed to be there, but this time it’s different since it bonds the brothers together, and at the same time tears them apart.
Is what happened these two here meant to carry us directly into the flash-forwards that we’ve seen all season? Not necessarily, but showrunner Julie Plec does tell The Hollywood Reporter that they could eventually be tied together in some way:
“It doesn’t specifically connect to the flash-forward but the fallout of their experiences absolutely impacts where their characters go to get Damon to the point where he puts himself down and to get Stefan to the point where he finds himself on the run again, waking up his brother. The second half of the season is all about exploring the dynamic between the brothers and the lengths that they’re willing to go to protect each other but also epic ways that they have disappointed each other and have continued to do so. It’s a really powerful brother storyline that I’m really excited about.”
We feel like this story has the potential to be fascinating, nostalgic, and above all back to the core of what the show is about. That’s something that we do wish that we were by and large getting more of from many shows deep into their run. Sometimes, there really is value in keeping things a little bit more fundamental.
