‘True Detective’ season 3: Cary Fukunaga would have no interest in returning
We imagine that it is probably no surprise to anyone that Cary Fukunaga has no interest in returning to “True Detective” for another season, but his latest comments on the subject just provide you with that additional bit of verification. Fukunaga (who has since gone on to do “Beasts of No Nation”) was one of the reasons for the first season’s brilliance, given that he directed every episode and gave the show some of the strongest sequences we’ve seen on TV in years.
As he tells Digital Spy, however, he seems happy to continue to do other projects rather than dive back into something that was an enormous challenge:
“I had never planned on doing season two. I don’t even think I realized how much work season one would be. But I try not to do the same thing twice. And I definitely would never have done two seasons of the same show. That’s far too big of a commitment. After season one was done, I was very happy to move on, back to feature film and a completely different world to immerse myself in. And whatever I do next, hopefully, will feel just as different as anything I’ve ever done before.”
At the moment, it is not even certain if HBO or “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto want to do more of the show. Its ratings were still good for most of the summer, but the series was for the most part critically-panned for being overly serious, confusing, and art for art’s sake. We do think that there is still potential in the brand, but it would take a shakeup of the style and potentially even the tone.
What we do know is that Pizzolatto has signed a new deal with the premium cable network, so one way or another, he will continue to develop new shows for them.
