‘The Leftovers’ season 3: On renewal hopes, story speculation, and more

Leftovers -Tonight marks the end of a chapter for HBO’s “The Leftovers,” and what an excellent chapter it truly was. It would be far too much of a knee-jerk reaction to proclaim it one of the finest second seasons of any show in history, but it’s definitely up there when you look at precisely everything that it has brought to the table this year. Damon Lindelof’s scripts are the most compelling we’ve seen to date, while Justin Theroux, Carrie Coon, and Christopher Eccleston have all made incredible cases for acting awards.

It’s a shame that a show this amazing has to be in limbo for a third season, but here we are. While the show did receive a nomination from the Writers Guild of America Awards (the first group this season to announce such things), it remains unclear if critical acclaim is going to be enough to save it. It may need a miracle just like Miracle National Park needs one on the show tonight. The ratings are pretty poor (at least in terms of live viewing), and it unfortunately may take word-of-mouth and binge-watching in order to get a larger crowd of people on board again.

If there is one thing the show has going for it, it’s that HBO is one of the most supportive networks out there when it comes to great content. One component that has to be thought of here, though, to go along with whether or not the network renews the show is whether or not Lindelof and Tom Perrotta are interested in doing more. The decision could lie as much with them as anyone.

As for what the third season could be, it’s possible that we see the show navigating yet another part of this universe. After all, at a certain point you do have to wonder if Jarden is about to fall apart at the seams. With that, we also have to wonder how many cast members would stick around. The Murphy family is scattering, and there’s even so long that people like Tom and Laurie could make since given their distance from the cast.
