What’s next for NBC after ‘The Wiz Live!’ success?
At the moment, we imagine that there are some people over at NBC who are flying high off of the success of “The Wiz Live!,” and probably with good reason. Not only was the production an increase in the ratings over last year’s “Peter Pan Live!” production, but it also for the first time brought the network good reviews for a live musical production. “The Sound of Music Live!” had great numbers in kicking off this trend, but most of the reviews were tepid at best.
You would be right to think that this success would enable the network to want to move quickly on their next bit of live theater, but as one of the show’s producers in Neil Meron tells The Hollywood Reporter, there are no firm decisions on what it will just yet:
“That’s the question of the hour. We have tossed many titles around and batted them around with NBC Entertainment president Bob Greenblatt but we haven’t settled on what’s next. We’re also enjoying this moment. Next week when the dust has cleared, we will probably start focusing on what’s next.”
There are a pretty wide array of possibilities as for what the producers could do next, and what direction they could go with it. We know that “The Music Man” was at one point being discussed, though it would take the right actor in the lead role to make it happen. We’d be thrilled to see a production of “My Fair Lady,” but who knows if that is considered mainstream enough for some audiences? Both of these are productions we think will be made at some point.
