‘Sherlock: The Abominable Bride’ spoilers: Official synopsis for New Year’s Day Special!

Why we are in the process of celebrating one significant holiday in Thanksgiving, why not look ahead for a minute at another event coming up on New Year’s Day? We’re speaking of course on “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride,” which brings Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman back into the fold once more after almost two years off the air. Given that there is no timetable just yet as to when the fourth season is going to air, we really have to take advantage of getting some more story from the show whenever we can … even if this particular special is not actually canon to everything else that is going on.

This week, the BBC released a rather lengthy synopsis for this episode. It contains quite a few teasers, and also sets up the period and the story for this particular adventure rather well:

We’ve been here before – but what if this wasn’t the modern day but the late Victorian period? What if the world’s most famous consulting detective and his best friend lived in a Baker Street of steam trains, hansom cabs, top hats and frock-coats?

Welcome to ‘Sherlock’ in 1895!

Some things, though, remain reassuringly the same. Friendship, adventure and especially, MURDER…

Why is Thomas Ricoletti a little surprised to see his wife dressed in her old wedding gown? Because, just a few hours before, she took her own life…

Mrs Ricoletti’s ghost now appears to be prowling the streets with an unslakeable thirst for revenge. From fog-shrouded Limehouse to the bowels of a ruined church, Holmes, Watson and their friends must use all their cunning to combat an enemy seemingly from beyond the grave and the final, shocking truth about… the Abominable Bride!

It feels like the primary purpose of this special is just to give you more of a classic Sherlock Holmes story, and for everyone involved to have a little bit of fun. After all, you have to remember that for the parties involved at this point this has to be a labor of love. There’s clearly not that much of an incentive for them to keep doing the show otherwise.
