Ratings: ‘Empire’ season 2 falls hard; ‘Survivor’ down; ‘Code Black’ improves (11/25/2015)
How much more evidence do you really need that airing a new episode of something the day before Thanksgiving is a bad move? In making this decision, Fox may have jeopardizes the uber-hit potential of one of their biggest shows … or at least they have lowered the season average by a wide margin.
The winners – Well, there’s not much here, given that there were only a few programs that aired new episodes on Wednesday night. “Code Black” (1.4) is the only one to actually post an increase versus the week before, and it was surprisingly a pretty decent one of more than 10%. How did this happen? We feel like thanks to it being the sort of show that people can watch and get into right away, it actually benefits from there not being a whole lot of competition on the air. It probably picked up people who usually watch “Chicago PD” or something else.
The losers – “Empire” was hit was a huge blow airing right before Thanksgiving, dropping almost 30% versus the week before to a series-low 3.1 rating. While we are worried that the show’s time as the super-hit it was during season 1 is over, we don’t think the show is going to stay anywhere near that level for a long time in the future. After all, you just have to remember the circumstances here! It’s easy to imagine it recovering in a week’s time.
Also, “Survivor” (1.8) fell more than 10% to its lowest rating of the season, which is mostly a bummer thanks to it being quite possibly the greatest two episodes that the show has ever aired back to back.

Those two episodes were almost textbook examples of the perfect Survivor episode. Literally everything you could want from the show, back to back! I watched them on DVR, so I’m probably a contributor to the decline, but it’s SO tragic those awesome episodes didn’t produce the win CBS wanted.

It’s a bummer, but it’ll probably bounce back next week. Night before Thanksgiving’s always a killer.

Oh ok. Yeah that definitely makes sense and alleviates the situation since it’s an external factor. I hope strong word of mouth over the holiday (it seems both episodes were universally acclaimed) helps it bounce back stronger than it normally would.

It’s not surprising to see CODE BLACK do better. THERE WAS NO CHICAGO PD! What was CODE BLACK going up against that had any substance to it.? I’m happy for it, but let’s tell it like it is.
