American Music Awards 2016: Jennifer Lopez opens the show with ‘Waiting for Tonight,’ dance montage
The American Music Awards are here! If you told us that the introduction to the show tonight was going to be Jennifer Lopez slowing down “Waiting for Tonight” before a bizarre dance routine broke out on stage, we would have questioned whether you were playing with us.
This was … odd. The funny thing is that Lopez proved once again at the start of the show that she is a very good singer, so we don’t completely understand the need for everything else. We love (we’re using that word ironically) that this show is something billed as being at least for most families, and then minutes after starting we have a booty-shaking shaking contest featuring women dressed in what to be leotard cosplay for Jaimie Alexander’s “Blindspot” character. Also, “B–ch Better Have My Money” played during it.
Person with worst audience reaction – Nicki Minaj, who really could have cared less that “Anaconda” was a part of the routine.
Person with most game reaction – Justin Bieber doing the robot. Yep, Bieber took this better than anyone else. Never thought we’d say that either.
Person with completely indifferent reaction – Pretty much everyone else. Hey, they have to figure out someone to go to with Taylor Swift not there.
Ultimately, it just feels like such an odd choice to start a show celebrating music by only featuring actual singing in two out of the first nine minutes. The rest of it felt like some odd YouTube end-of-year mashup of a bunch of songs you’ve already heard two thousand times.
