Is AMC giving ‘Into the Badlands’ a potential ‘Low Winter Sun’ backlash with ‘Talking Dead’ move?
On Sunday night, AMC is airing the premiere of a show that we are extremely excited for in “Into the Badlands.” After all, how many opportunities are there to see a series that really emphasizes martial arts in such a primary way? It’s a short first season, but one that will hopefully find an audience.
The good news is that we feel pretty confident that there will be some viewers watching the show, but the question is whether or not they are doing so because they really want to. With that, we turn to the terrifying tale of “Low Winter Sun.” While this drama (which ironically starred Lennie James, now a regular on “The Walking Dead”) was actually rather good, many potential viewers were so miffed at it dividing up “Breaking Bad” and “Talking Bad” on the schedule that they never ended up giving it a chance. The show ultimately became somewhat of a joke, and it was canceled following one low-rated season on the air.
Now, we have to hope that “Into the Badlands” does not suffer a similar fate. We get AMC wanting to use the lead-in to boost viewers, but at this point, wouldn’t it be smarter to just try it at 11:00 p.m. Eastern time after “Talking Dead”? At least at that point you know viewers are watching primarily to see it, and they won’t have the backlash we’ve already seen online.
We hope that there are people out there that give this show a chance, and realize that the people making it were not setting out at the time to come up with something that would shaft people from being able to watch “Talking Dead” when they want to see it.
We will be checking back in on “Into the Badlands” at some point during the season, so be on the lookout.
