Crossover November: Should ‘Hawaii Five-0,’ ‘Blue Bloods’ join forces?

CBS LogoCBS has shown themselves over time to be a network willing to do a variety of different crossovers to many of their shows. Take, for example, the fact that “JAG” ultimately is now connected to “NCIS,” “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “Scorpion,” “NCIS: New Orleans,” and “Hawaii Five-0.” That’s a good chunk of their present TV shows, and we do wonder whether or not it would be interesting if “Blue Bloods” joined the fold.

Specifically, we wonder about “Hawaii Five-0” and “Blue Bloods.” Are they geographically close to one another at all? No, but given that they are both Friday night shows, there is a certain intrigue that could come with pairing them up. With that, let’s dive into the latest entry in our Crossover November series.

The case for a crossover – It could first and foremost help the ratings for both shows, and we think that there would be something interesting in a fish-out-of-water way seeing how Danny or Jamie handle life in Hawaii, or how McGarrett would tackle being in New York City. There are easy reasons to make it happen, since you could just cite a case that caused the cops to have to travel. With such similar subject matter and both shows coming from within CBS from a production standpoint, there is not really any major hurdles that would need to be jumped over in order to make this work.

The case against it – The biggest one is merely a matter of tone. While they are both technically dramas, “Blue Bloods” is a show that is thought of as the far more serious of the two, and with its focus on serious police matters and also the outcry from the public, it doesn’t have much fun. “Hawaii Five-0” is a show that is actually very fun at times, and we’re not sure that some of that humor would cross over very well. Therefore, this is probably only going to work if you bring some “Blue Bloods” characters to Hawaii in order to get them to lighten up.

Also, the two shows actually film on location. Making that work would be a production nightmare and likely expensive.
