‘Girl Meets World’ season 2, episode 24 reaction: Kids of science, kids of faith

Girl Meets World -Never did we think that we would be able to make a “Lost” reference in the title for a “Girl Meets World” article, but here we are discussing Friday night’s new episode “Girl Meets Belief,” a standalone half-hour that had a difficult challenge of tackling faith and, to a certain extent, religion. This is a tricky subject for a kids’ show, especially in an era where many are easily offended and when social media can lead to quick arguments.

The reason that this show did a particularly strong job with this episode is that it gave us an opportunity to see a story all about just faith in general, and whether or not it was right to believe in things that you could not see. It was interesting to also see the divide on it: Riley was very frustrated with how Maya did not want to take anything beyond face value (even to the point where it started to threaten their friendship), and with Lucas and Farkle the same thing was happening with “man of science” Farkle.

The four eventually did come to some sort of common ground thanks to an assignment that forced them to look at important people through history and how they used their beliefs for various reasons. The message here was that it can be okay to believe in things, but you also have to respect what others think and feel, as well. Are we going to say it was the most eventful or even the funniest episode of this season? Far from it. Humor-wise, it was probably one of the weakest in a while.

In the end we feel like “Girl Meets Belief” is one of those episodes meant to just impart some wisdom onto the show’s younger viewers, and not for any other reason like playing on a heavy sense of nostalgia for older fans. Hopefully that will become at some point soon, if for no other reason than that we haven’t had it in a while.
