‘Blue Bloods’ season 6, episode 8 review: Is Danny’s marriage in peril?
We were a little critical of last week’s episode of “Blue Bloods” being a little bit inconsequential and boring, but we are pleased to say now that this is how the show recovered on CBS Friday night: With the best story of the season.
There were strong components to it across the board, but the biggest one to us may be that the producers are really willing to let Danny’s hunt for a serial killer breathe. What he had to realize is that his relationship with Linda was not suffering because of the job, or because of the fact that this person was after his family. It was more because of the way that he was not attending to her in the right way after the events of last season. We appreciate the serialized feel here (it’s something that the show rarely does), and it humanizes both of these characters. It makes them more like normal people with their own set of ups and downs.
For Frank, we loved this story because it continued to play on the relevant subject of police paranoia. We know that the show has a very specific perspective that can at times make you wonder if it is too slanted, but given how many stories out there tell the narrative from the perspective of the protesters, it is also important to get it from the police side. In Frank’s case, he was booed off of a college speaking gig because of police distrust and claims of racism, even though there was nothing that he did directly. Is there a problem that needs to be solved? We feel like he recognizes that, but simultaneously is stick between a rock and a hard place where he has to continue to his job.
While the distrust and attempt at a resolution between Jamie and Eddie tonight was a smaller story, it was also effective in its own right. All three of these “main” stories tonight shined in their own way, and we feel like this was “Blue Bloods” at its best: Compelling, thought-provoking police drama that isn’t trying to just make us solve a murder. It’s doing more. Grade: A-.
