‘Empire’ season 2: Why is Lucious out to destroy Andre’s faith?

Empire -Nothing in the “Empire” universe is necessarily stable, and this is especially true when you are talking about Lucious Lyon. This is a man who ultimately just wants what he wants, and he has no problem taking something away from someone else in order to get it.

As of late, we have seen Lucious’ latest tactics revolve around trying to strip something away from Andre that he has tried to hold dear so far in his faith. He is holding onto this thanks to his recent baptism, which Lucious didn’t even stick around for all the way. While he may have his reasons for it, you cannot dispute that it sends a less-than-favorable message in regards to how he cares about a big moment in his son’s life.

So why do this, and why continue to torment a man who has already battled many a demon in life? This is something that showrunner Ilene Chaiken explained to The Hollywood Reporter:

“Part of the reason is [these actions] Lucious, in his twisted way, wants to be everybody’s only God. Lucious is a monotheist and he’s the God in that universe, and if Andre is devoted to another power, that undermines Lucious’ power. We’ll also find out going forward that there’s another reason, a much more personal and psychological reason for Lucious’ disdain for religion in general and particularly for Andre’s faith.”

What we’re really getting at here is that these actions are not going to end soon. As a matter of fact, they’ll probably only escalate as Terence Howard’s character seeks out more power.
