MTV’s ‘Awkward’ midseason finale reaction: Is a season 6 still possible?
Ever since the beginning of “Awkward” season 5, the word on the street for the most part has been that this will be its last. However, is that really the plan? While we cannot speak for any of the cast, the people responsible for making the show would be happy if it was to continue, provided of course that all parties involved feel the same way.
Speaking to TVLine about the big midseason finale Monday, which featured Jenna proclaiming that not everything goes according to plan for her and Matty in their first year of college, executive producer Mike Chessler said the following about the show’s future:
“We’re hopeful that 5B is not going to be the end of the show. That’s not been determined yet, one way or the other. But 5B would be the end of this chapter of the story, because if we continue the show, I think it would be another era and another part of the journey. In terms of the Matty/Jenna story, it was very clear to us when we took over the show what it was about, and … we’ve ended up in a place that’s very organic, based on who these characters are. The reason people relate to Jenna and Matty’s romantic arc is because it’s so true to high school relationships.”
With this in mind, we wonder if the show would consider presenting a more adult version of the Jenna / Matty relationship if we were ever to see them near the end of their time in college, where people aren’t always as insecure and wondering constantly about their feelings. There is something interesting to us about seeing these two build a life together and what that would look like, provided that they ever make it that far.
What we figure the show would struggle more with, given that it has a core cast everyone seems to like, is the inevitability that the majority of your friends in high school go in different directions. In real life, we’re not sure that Jenna, Tamara, Sadie, Lissa, and others would still be communicating years down the road.

I’d love to see this show keep going. I mean it’s a mix of all kinda diff shows. Adding another season from there lives in collage would be amazing! I mean we need great shows in this time like the 90s with……Saved by the Bell, 90210, Boy meets world I mean come on those are some of the best shows EVER! Keep Awkward going going as long as the cast is willing and the world keeps wanting.

I hope they leave the characters to go on with their lives in private. The worst thing Glee did was to follow the students after they left high school. Sometimes writers just don’t know when a series is done, and keep it going way past the point where it should end. I’m sure we’d all like to know what happens next in their various lives, but it will be best if they just leave them all to get on with it. This was an awesome series – let’s leave it that way!

I hate to say it. I’m heavily invested in AWKWARD. at this point. I went from partly watching episodes to watching episodes in full this season. AWKWARD. will never leave us in a good place, there’s always a dilemma with Jenna right around the corner. And that’s problematic with AWKWARD. in this stage.
Jenna cannot always be finding herself in a so-called insecure place, there has to be evolution with Jenna in a big way, inside and out. It’s unfortunate Jenna ignored Val’s advice about the Freshmen 15 (ignore Ramen, go organic) as one will see in the minor sneak peek for 5b. And you can tell Sadie, Lacey, and Tamara will have something to say about it.
I will say Ashley Rickards appeared fuller earlier this year in photo-ops at MTV Movie Awards, and some Instagram photos.
And Ashley did say on her website her eating disorder came back in a big way for the first time in 14 years.
The question I have about Ashley’s fuller appearance earlier this year is whether it was mandated by AWKWARD. producers for her to gain weight to achieve realism of the storyline.
I will say too Ashley was promoting her book at the time these changes with her all occurred, so this could’ve been PR moves to fit both her book, and AWKWARD.
That would be the ultimate question I want AWKWARD. EP’s to answer about Jenna with her so-called FRESHMEN 15.
And if AWKWARD. were to continue beyond 5b, it would be nice if AWKWARD. can grow beyond the demographic and premise MTV has it in, and forget about all these troubles Jenna has.
Honestly, I don’t see AWKWARD. having a life beyond high school or during college years if it’s on MTV. The only way that can happen is if MTV pulls a Degrassi having new students take over AWKWARD., with one or two holdovers.
But if AWKWARD. continues with its current cast, then it’s suited better on another network like VH1, FREEFORM (ABC Family), or FX and FXX.
Then, there’s the online route landing in places like NETFLIX or Hulu. From there, AWKWARD. doesn’t have to be limited to its current premise of Jenna and her dilemmas. There can be Jenna & Matty in a good place finally (or no J&M at all), but Jenna can finally be sure of herself lending her ear and advise to others. One can do more creatively with content if online, and not be confined to traditional network focuses.
Even now, MTV can be generous and post all of 5b online at once like HOUSE OF CARDS promoting their app, iTunes, Hulu, and/ or Netflix. It’s a good move at this point given ratings, and MTV moving forward with new programming.
Then again, there’s always 11pm timeslot right after Catfish in 2016 which MTV could place it at. It would be great if all 12 episodes of 5b were shown in 3 weeks airing Monday thru Thursday at 11pm.
Finally, it all depends on casts wanting to do another season of AWKWARD. for it to continue beyond 5b.
