Crossover November: Will ‘Scandal’ season 5, ‘Empire’ season 2 join forces?
Let’s start this edition of Crossover November by throwing logistics out the window. A crossover event between “Scandal” and “Empire” has utterly zero chance of happening. The shows are on different networks and from different studios, and the last thing Fox would want to do is lend out its super-popular characters to help out another network … even if “Scandal” doesn’t really need it.
However, when we were formulating this article series earlier this month we were wondering what show would be the right one to pair the Terence Howard – Taraji P. Henson series up with. Few other shows on Fox make sense, and while “Nashville” has a heavy musical component, we just don’t see Empire Entertainment having much use for the happenings of a certain Tennessee city anytime soon.
However, they could definitely use the services of Olivia Pope.
The case for a crossover – We’re not sure that we envision a situation coming up where Lucious Lyon goes and has dinner with Fitzgerald Grant. We also don’t see Cyrus sitting down for a chat with Cookie. However, there would be something fun to us about Olivia coming in to try to clean up one of Hakeem’s messes, or seeing if there is a way to make the Lyon family into a likable group rather than just one perceived for either constant in-fighting or entitlement over the patriarch’s throne. She has “fixed” so many other crises over the past five years, so couldn’t she handle anything that these people threw at her? Also, the idea of Kerry Washington and Taraji in a scene together sounds like GOLD.
Also, maybe there are a few people on “Empire” who could benefit from an encounter with Huck. He’s more terrifying than anything they’re going to run into. While bringing just Olivia into “Empire” could work, a better scenario when it comes to getting more cast members involved would be bringing a few “Empire” cast members to ABC would work better, since they could run into a variety of different people as a result.
The case against it – Oh, there are many. The shows don’t need to join forces for one, and we feel like many “Scandal” fans would rather just see a crossover with another Shonda Rhimes series than one that extends beyond the network. Also, do you really want to see Olivia and Quinn dancing to a musical performance? Both shows are dramas, but they have different tones for the most part. Add to this all of the logistical reasons that we mentioned earlier, and you have a crossover that is almost sure to be little more than a pipe dream.
