‘Once Upon a Time’ season 5, episode 7 preview: Hook lashes out as Merlin

Is Merlin going to be able to protect Emma Swan on “Once Upon a Time“? Entering Sunday night’s all-new episode, all we can really say with confidence about this character is that he has the knowledge to extract the darkness from her.

However, there is a difference between having the knowledge to do something and the means, and let’s just say that there is some rather harsh reaction to what he is saying from Captain Hook. Right now the pirate is in a little bit of a reactionary position, and understandably so given that the woman he loves is turning into someone else. He wants to fix it before it is too late.

Unfortunately, we know that something happens during the time at Camelot to render much of what Merlin says here useless. We know that he is not around in the flesh in present-day Storybrooke, and we instead have a message in his place that Nimue should be sought out. This is someone who he has a personal history with, and this will be valuable in determining the next move in the plan to transform the Dark Swan.

In general, Sunday’s episode will be hugely significant to the future of many of our characters. This will be a window into the past for Merlin, and a chance to see how someone with his history, and also his skill set, manages to ultimately become who he is when we first met him in the flashback with Emma at the movie theater at the very beginning of this season.
