‘Luther’ season 4 receives U.S. premiere date, will air as TV movie

Luther

While for whatever reason BBC One continues to be incredibly confusing when announcing when “Luther” is going to be airing in the United Kingdom, the folks over at BBC America are choosing to keep things rather simple.

Today, the network confirmed that the Idris Elba series is going to return with the entirety of the fourth season on Thursday, December 17. Previously it was thought that this was going to be divided up into two or three episodes and air as a miniseries, but clearly, the network in America wanted to do something a little bit different.

Now, we return our frustrations mostly to Britain so that they can start to clear up this mess. The BBC is notorious about waiting until the last minute to confirm air dates; the only reason we feel like they already announced the “Sherlock” special for New Year’s Day is because PBS didn’t want to wait around for them.

The story for the “Luther” special is still under lock and key, but you can anticipate the title character getting pulled out of a quiet life thanks to the rise of a dangerous and threatening presence. In the end, it really does not matter too much what the story is about here, since the majority of fans out there are probably going to watch anyway. Why wouldn’t they? Elba is one of the finest actors in the business, and this is a particularly strong series known for big twists and intense character moments. We’ll have more on its future as we get closer to the air date.
