‘Empire’ season 2, episode 6 review: Cookie’s new man; Lucious’ new protegee
Wednesday night’s new episode of “Empire” made you wait a week longer than usual, but certainly seemed desperate to pack everything in as a result.
Let’s start with the negative: The music. We almost think that this show should consider putting less and less of this into the stories as time goes by. It was a useful device in the early going to differentiate the show from others, but it now take up a lot of time that could be used for story … and there was some fascinating stuff that happened here, from Lucious relating more to someone who is not one of children to the eventual good news for Hakeem. He’s safe!
In other words, Cookie officially now has a hookup in Adam Rodriguez’s character, and was it as uncomfortable for everyone else to see them go at it to the same music that Lucious was handing down to his new protegee?
We ultimately feel like the goal for these characters right now is totry to get comfortable and find what could be their new normal, especially now that Hakeem is safe. We feel like Lucious is somewhat of a lost soul desperate to find something to cling to, while Cookie is someone who, for the most part, seems focused in on making sure Lyon Dynasty gets off the ground and she proves something to everyone, even herself. Andre has to balance his career and a newfound faith, and Jamal has more business obligations than ever.
Do all of these elements make for an entertaining show? “Empire” has moments, but we have to say that after the last cliffhanger, we expected more than what we had in the end here. Grade: C+.
