‘How to Get Away with Murder’ season 2, episode 5 review: The tribulations of Bonnie and Asher
It’s rather interesting that although the Keating 5 have spent most of “How to Get Away with Murder” under some sort of suspicion, it is really Bonnie and Asher that should be looked at the most for being snakes. These are survivalists, people who will do or so anything under the sun if it means that they get another day to breathe or reinforce their point of view.
The end of the episode certainly showed that they are willing to turn on each other, given that Asher ran from Bonnie as soon as he had a chance to in the flash-forward, and promptly went to the police to deliver a statement. Yes, that is Asher: Always out first and foremost for himself when the going gets tough. Bonnie has blood all over her shirt, so if there is a way to set her up for some sort of crime, he’s got ample opportunity.
Asher, in the main timeline of the show, also made it clear that he has no real interest in keeping secrets. You see, his father is in many ways just as shrewd as he is, and his decision to testify could jeopardize everything for a whole lot of people … unless Annalise managed to sway him with an extremely disturbing video of Bonnie’s childhood that shows you just where she came from.
This episode is still one about a guy out for self-preservation, but also a woman in Bonnie who will stop at nothing to ensure that she and those she is close to are safe. It is her methods that are extremely questionable / illegal / terrible, but we could say the same about Wes, Michaela, Frank, or anyone.
As entertaining as some of the story was in this episode, it was also confusing at other points. There is a time in which we’d love to see what the show could do for a whole season without all of the jumping around in time or without the secrets, since it is stacking almost one problem on top of another. Even for devoted viewers, it can start to feel confusing. Grade: B-.
