‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 12, episode 5 reaction: What’s next for Meredith after Penny shocker?

Meredith -When it rains on “Grey’s Anatomy,” it pours like it does outside the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. This is what happened for Meredith Grey on Thursday night’s new episode. Not only did she have to learn that Callie’s new girlfriend Penny is the woman responsible for killing Derek, but she is also coming to work at the hospital. Her old teaching hospital has folded, and it makes sense that she would want to be close to her girlfriend. However, at the same time nobody really knew or understood this other part of Penny’s past that is starting to come out now.

Let’s make it clear that this particular relationship between Meredith and Penny is going to be a complicated one to watch unfold moving forward. This is something that executive producer Debbie Allen had to say to The Hollywood Reporter:

“It’s going to be a real challenge for them. They don’t end this episode on good terms. Penny’s going to be at the hospital. What is that going to be like? Amelia is just done with Penny — and she was so nice to her without knowing who she was — but now she knows something else. It’s a real reversal of fortune for everyone. Talk about being blindsided. Meredith and Amelia are blindsided. Everyone else’s problems kind of go away. When Meredith says who Penny really is and walks away, it shuts everything down. Everyone’s problems become smaller. It’s like a bomb has hit. Wounds, missing limbs, broken hearts and spirits … all pale in comparison.”

This reveal is also going to challenge the relationship between Penny and Callie, and Amelia’s story in the middle of all of this is going to be even more difficult. If you remember, she was brokenhearted last season after she did not have the proper chance to say goodbye.
