‘The Flash’ season 2, episode 3 reaction: Tom Cavanagh on Harrison Wells’ return

FlashThe second season of “The Flash” has already created quite a few surprises, and the biggest on Tuesday was seeing just how Harrison Wells is going to be entering Barry Allen’s world. This time, he is crossing over from Earth-2, but a very different person than the one who ended up being the Reverse Flash. This is the real Harrison as though Eobard never got in the way, and while he may not be pure evil on the same level as that guy, this hardly makes his the nicest person Barry will ever meet, either.

Speaking per “Entertainment Tonight,” Tom Cavanagh claimed that he helped to come up with the idea of making Dr. Wells 2.0 into a little bit of a jerk, and much of that came from his own desire to use a different set of emotions for his character to get his way:

“It just seemed to me to be a massive opportunity to turn the tables,” Cavanagh continued. “With Eobard as Harrison last year, there was a certain intelligence and charm and a mannered way to him — a thoughtfulness. I think the expectation [was] that this same person coming From Earth-Two would be like that and my thought was, ‘Why?’ … If he’s a much more brusque, and arrogant, and generates conflict, than I think all the better for the show, and all the better for me to play. Everything that Eobard did was justified. He had a plan and he completely believed in his plan, and the character that I’m playing his year is similarly committed.”

You will start to see the next Dr. Wells on Earth-1 next week, and it may actually take almost no time at all for Barry Allen to start to trust him once again. Maybe some of that is tied to his desire to actually communicate with the Dr. Wells he thought he was getting through much of season 1.
