‘Saturday Night Live’ music: Demi performs ‘Cool for the Summer,’ ‘Confident’

SNL -We have to admit, the challenge for Demi Lovato was different on “Saturday Night Live” tonight than the majority of the other people we have seen on the show over the season so far. She interrupted a show that was hosted by Tracy Morgan, and the enthusiasm for fans of him over the course of the past few months is through the roof … especially for “SNL” diehards who remember him from his original run on the show.

Still, Demi did a good job of bringing plenty of energy to the show as she performed two songs within a short amount of time for her first time on the stage: A snippet for “Cool for the Summer” and also her new single “Confident.” It took us a minute to get used to the first song especially, since the arrangement is so different than the radio single and it felt like the instrumentation was more there for the second song. It’s only appropriate that this one felt so much more confident and powerful on the stage. Demi’s fairly seasoned with this sort of stuff at this point, so we’re not surprised that she got a nice response from the crowd.

For her second performance, Demi took on a more emotional song in “Stone Cold,” one that featured her hitting some killer vocals along with a few moments where you could tell her vocals were breaking. It was almost reminiscent of Miley Cyrus’ second song on the show earlier this season. We imagine that these moments for these two are overwhelming, given that they’ve worked so hard to get to this point and are trying to be viewed as serious artists. For Demi, we feel like she’s got a lot to be proud of after this show.
