‘Rookie Blue’ canceled after six seasons

Rookie Blue -

We knew that the future of “Rookie Blue” was in doubt for quite a long time. Most shows tend to face rising costs as they get further and further into their run, and for Canadian shows, this is true and then some. Even if a show has a broadcast partner in America as this series did with ABC, there is only so long that it can last.

With that, we’re not exactly shocked to be reporting today that Global / Shaw Media have canceled the series after many years on the air. We feel like the most-recent finale was written in a way to function as a series-ender, In a statement, here is what Shaw’s Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer Christine Shipton had to say:

“The success of Rookie Blue is a testament not only to the extremely talented team of Ilana Frank, Tassie Cameron, David Wellington and studio Entertainment One (eOne), but the electrifying cast that has resonated with legions of fans that have followed the show since Season One … After six seasons the series reached a natural conclusion and this season’s finale was the perfect wrap up for both our rookies and for fans, especially with the marriage of our favourite couple, Sam and Andy.”

Given the ratings for “Rookie Blue” this summer in America, we’re sure ABC can figure out something that will fare right about as well in the timeslot, even if it won’t have the same passionate fan following behind it (at least for the early going.) We’ll miss the show, but it had a pretty tremendous run and the cancellation coming out now allows the cast time to find some other gigs.
