TV Quick Hits: More ‘Grandfathered,’ ‘The Grinder’ scripts; Donald Glover pickup; ‘Chicago Med’ news

Fox wants more scripts – Specifically, we’re talking about “Grandfathered” and “The Grinder.” Six more episodes are going to be written for commission, which brings the overall total up to 19 each.

Even though the ratings for neither show are necessarily spectacular, there is a strong motivation for why Fox would want to do this: Look at their ratings elsewhere. Beyond “Empire,” is there a single show killing it on the network? “Gotham” is so-so at best, “Minority Report” is a huge flop, and most of the appeal of “Rosewood” is it airing on the same night as “Empire.” Note that more scripts don’t mean episodes, but it’s an indicator that Fox is at least thinking in that direction. It helps both shows that they have been time-shifted well, and are reasonably popular with critics.

“Atlanta” ordered by FX – Great news for all Donald Glover / Childish Gambino fans: The network wants ten episodes of the hip-hop comedy set in the aforementioned city. We of course know Glover best from “Community,” but he is a strong writer dating back to “30 Rock” and also some of his standup. FX took their time before ordering this, so clearly they wanted to make sure it was done correctly.

“Chicago Med” casting news – According to TVLine, Julie Berman of “General Hospital” fame is coming aboard the “Chicago Fire” spin-off in the recurring role of Toni Zanetti, an attending surgeon who is confident, determined, and will not be duped into making wrong decisions. She’s someone who should be fairly magnetic to watch. She’s first appear a few episodes into the show’s run, which will begin on November 17 after the conclusion of “Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris.”
