‘Gotham’ season 2, episode 4 spoilers: Michael Chiklis previews tough-as-nails Nathaniel Barnes

Barnes -You could say that last week’s new episode of “Gotham” entitled “The Last Laugh” was the show closing the door on one chapter in the story, and now, we are about to enter another courtesy of Captain Nathaniel Barnes. Michael Chiklis will have a huge role the remainder of the season as Jim Gordon’s new boss at the GCPD, someone who takes a very black-and-white approach to stopping the Penguin and some of the other foes on the show.

So how would the veteran of “The Shield” and “American Horror Story” describe this part himself? Speaking in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Michael makes at least part of this clear:

“I see him as a guy who’s clinging to the law because of his own personal experiences. He’s a guy who sees the law as the thing that separates us from the animals — and the animal within each of us. This season is called ‘Rise of the Villains,’ and thus far the villains have been kicking a** and taking names, and my character is serving as a counterbalance to that. He comes in like a wild man — like a bull, not a china shop, but in a bull ring — he’s the cavalry, pushing back against all these villains and looking at it as a war.”

Is it possible that we could see Barnes become a villain himself eventually? Part of the joy of this show is that these things are left wide open, and this is something that we could see happening based on the events of the season. Harvey Dent is one great example of this from the Batman universe.
