‘Saturday Night Live’ review: ‘Fox & Friends,’ gun video, Amy Schumer, and ‘Weekend Update’ (videos)

SNL -Saturday Night Live” loves to start off many of their shows with political comedy, so can you really be that surprised that the show decided to dive back into “Fox & Friends” at the start of their Amy Schumer show? This is a popular recurring sketch, and one that they love to do just for making fun of Fox News alone.

Interestingly, there is a part of this that now feels like Secondhand News, hearing the way the show uses the hosts to talk about topics like Planned Parenthood; also, the list of corrections is always genius. It’s not the most creative or interesting way to start the show, but at least it’s consistent … we guess.

Now, take a look at some other highlights from the evening.

Amy Schumer monologue – This seemed to go on for a long time, but we didn’t really mind since some of the stuff in here (especially the jokes about Bradley Cooper) were particularly hilarious. Back in the early days of Amy’s comedy, we really didn’t think she was broad or big enough. This was impressive as someone who first saw her on “Last Comic Standing.”

Airplane sketch – This is a great example of a sketch that would have been significantly funnier in the event that it was actually shorter. We were dying of laughter in the immediate aftermath of Vanessa Bayer’s character going outside the plane. However, that quickly changed when we saw Schumer do the same thing. It didn’t need to do the same joke twice when it was funny the first time.

Adult classroom scene – This was similar to the airplane sketch in that the initial joke was really funny: A classroom scene that was really a setting for a certain mature video. However, one of the “students” actually thought it was class. Still, this could have been a minute shorter and worked just fine rather than having Aidy Bryant consistently interrupt Schumer and Kyle Mooney.

Gun video – We like that “SNL” is taking risks, and we hope they continue to do so. A video talking about guns as the perfect gift, though, was for us probably pushing the envelope too far. Maybe it’s just too sensitive for us personally, but we applaud them for the guts. Comedy and satire should remain uncensored.

Weekend Update – This may be our favorite “Weekend Update” of the Colin Jost – Michael Che era. Really, this was hysterically funny. The banter between the two was great, the jokes were really solid and edgy, and we also had Mrs. Santini, the woman from Colin’s apartment! The jury’s still out on Jay Pharoah’s new character Soloman, but at least it is something we could see improved in return visits.

Lincoln assassination skit – Yes, we have a sketch mocking Abe Lincoln in 2015. This was so ridiculous, but Amy’s Mary Todd was really funny! She was an egotistical actor coming off a Burger King commercial who wanted to remake the end of Lincoln’s life where she could be the star.

New “selfie stick” – Probably the biggest miss of the night. Yep, it’s a selfie stick for your butt. One-note joke, and too stupid for even most sitcoms.

Council meeting – There were a few funny moments (Leslie Jones proclaiming that she is an alcoholic thinking that she was at AA), this felt almost more like a tryout for various “SNL” characters than an actual sketch.

Purse rescue mission – We’ve preferred some other “baby shower” esque sketches in the past with the ladies all sitting around talking about a subject. Eventually, someone shows up who is a little bit off, and things go haywire. This time around, Amy was a crazy friend accusing people of purse theft.

Overall, a fun show at first that went off the rails after the Lincoln skit. It wasn’t a bad ending, but we think that because of the last three sketches, we’re probably not going to look back at this like we could have. Grade: B-.
