‘The Good Wife’ split-screen saga continues with Julianna Margulies, Archie Panjabi
We’ve pretty much now heard everything that there is to hear in regards to the now-infamous scene at the end of “The Good Wife” season 6, and one thing to us remains abundantly clear: We are really not any closer to getting an answer on what happened than we were going into this.
Let’s start by setting the stage. If you recall, the drama for many fans revolved mostly around a scene between Alicia (Julianna Margulies) and Kalinda (Archie Panjabi), their first in years, which was done via split-screen in the finale last May. Rather than this being a moment that symbolized people coming together after years of disarray, it instead became a further representation of pettiness in the eyes of many. It has never been confirmed that there were problems between the two women (Margulies is also a producer on the show), but that has long been the rumor.
Margulies sort-of addressed the feud allegations and that infamous scene for the first time in an interview with Vulture, and tried her best to dismiss it:
“Right, I’ve heard about [the feud]. Who says that? It’s totally gossip … There’s no story there, sorry … I actually had heard [that rumor] and I feel that it has been talked about and answered. I feel people just like to have gossip or make something into something that isn’t there. There’s no animosity on my part. It’s a shame, because I wonder if it was two men, when one finds out that he f—ed his best friend’s wife, if it would get that same attention, you know what I mean?
“[The final scene] was shot the way [co-creator Robert King] wanted to shoot it, and the storyline, too. You also have to remember, there’s difficulty … [Panjabi] was also doing another show, called The Fall. I went along with whatever Robert asked me to do and I did it happily.”
There are so many different things to break down in what Margulies said here, so let’s go point-by-point.
1. Maybe there is a gender component to this, but it is hard to really examine the issue from that perspective because of a bigger elephant in the room: No one seems to want to address head-on why the scene was filmed in the way that it was. We feel like had someone just been open about whatever was going on behind the scenes one way or another, the story would go away. The ambiguity is what keeps it alive more to us than it being two women or two men.
2. Has it really been answered? There are just enough other issues here that make you wonder, including a PaleyFest panel for the show earlier this year that Panjabi never really knew was taking place.
3. As Archive even notes on Twitter, “The Fall” was not in production at the time of the scene. They haven’t filmed any footage at all in 2015, for that matter.
So here we are, still wondering what actually happened. Margulies is putting the focus on King for making the decision that he did, while Panjabi is saying that she was available to film the scene with Julianna is the situation allowed for it. The mystery continues…
