‘Once Upon a Time’ season 5 spoilers: Is David Anders returning as Dr. Whale?

The more that we hear about “Once Upon a Time” and its returning cast of characters for season 5, the happier we ultimately are. Jamie Chung and Meghan Ory are both coming back as Mulan and Red / Ruby, and it now looks like David Anders is going to be stopping by once more as Dr. Whale.

Anders confirmed the news in a Q&A session with fans on Twitter, and one of the intriguing things about the timing here is that if you think back to season 2, there were plans put into motion for his character and Red to have some sort of romance. For one reason or another, though, it was put on the back-burner and never really addressed. Then, Ory went to do “Intelligence,” Anders wnet on “iZombie,” and the schedules never quite worked out.

One of the reasons why a return for Dr. Whale does actually work in this instance is because “iZombie” is settled in and also films relatively close by to the “Once Upon a Time” set; therefore, he can just come in on a day where he is not doing anything else. Unfortunately, we do still think that his status over there prohibits him from doing more than just an episode or two in the near future; but isn’t a little bit of Whale better than no Whale at all?

Until then, we figure that “Once Upon a Time” is going to do plenty to keep you entertained, from furthering along the Dark Swan story to also showing us more of Camelot. Also, you have the question as to what is going to happen with the real Rumpelstiltskin as opposed to evil Dark One Rumpelstiltskin, who is serving as the devil on Emma’s shoulder.
