‘Downton Abbey’ season 6, episode 2 review: The saga of Lady Edith, Marigold, and Mrs. Drew

“Downton Abbey” kicked off the sixth season last week with a show that brought you a number of different elements, from a prospective wedding to the big reveal (finally) of what happened to Mr. Green. It set the stage for many events to come, including Anna (finally) getting a chance to move forward.

Unfortunately, what we did see in here was further proof that while she and Mr. Bates want a child, her failure to deliver on one has produced a large amount of anxiety and uncertainty. Mary tried to convince her to see a doctor to have a minor procedure done, one that would help her to welcome someone into the world. Unfortunately, this was not a story with a happy ending … at least for now.

As for the other happenings at the Abbey…

Wedding plans – For Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes, the biggest issue that the two had this time around was finding the right venue. Carson wanted to give in to the flurry of offers in order to have the reception in the Great Hall; meanwhile, Mrs. Hughes wanted it somewhere that would not require her to feel like a service.

The hospital story – It’s interesting that we really have not heard that much about the hospital before this season … but that is really the only interesting thing about this story so far. While we do enjoy Violet as a character, it still feels like this story is leaving something on the table.

Marigold’s dilemma – Mary is not exactly killing it when it comes to the ideas this season. She felt as though she needed to bring Edith’s daughter out to see the pig farm, but the problem was that Mrs. Drew is clearly very attached still to having her around.

There were many directions that we thought the show could take with this story, but we have to admit that this is not where we saw it going: The child disappeared, and of course you do have to wonder what Mrs. Drew is going to do now. Robert may have actually been right to find a way to separate the two, even if it felt inconsiderate and cold at first.

This episode ended in one of the saddest ways possible: It feels like Marigold is fine and back with Edith after the capture, but has Mrs. Drew given up on her quest to take the child? Time will tell. Episode Grade: A-.
