‘Law & Order: SVU’ season 17: Show boss explains key Rollins decision

Law & Order: SVU logoBefore “Law & Order: SVU” season 17 even premiered on NBC, show executive producer Warren Leight had made one thing clear: The series was not going to stall on the matter of Kelli Giddish’s pregnancy. One way or another, you were going to learn by the end of the premiere if her character of Amanda Rollins was expecting, and from there the show would choose to handle the story in any way that they could.

Based on the wording and the way that the show was handling Rollins’ good news, it felt pretty clear to us that this was going to be written into the show. Now that it is, do you want to know why this decision was made? As Leight explains to The Hollywood Reporter, it was a combination of making matters easier for production (it is hard to hide a pregnancy for a long period of time) and also a creative challenge to see how Rollins handles a situation like this:

“I didn’t want to have deal with fern plants in front of her and fax machines and file folders. … I just thought we would play the reality of what happens to a working detective who finds herself pregnant and how does she adjust to it. Obviously for Kelli’s character, there aren’t a lot of people in her life.”

You are going to see more of Rollins’ family and potentially more of her life as a result of this, and we are excited to see how some of this unfolds.

Here is one other part of the off-camera story that is particularly interesting with this show: Ice-T and Peter Scanavino are all preparing to become parents, meaning that as a whole, we could be hearing a lot of baby advice being passed around the squad room over the months ahead.
