ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 5, episode 1 review: Is the secret out on Olivia and Fitz?

Scandal -Tonight, “Scandal” came back with the promise of telling a different story for Olivia Pope and Fitzgerald Grant, one where they would actually be able to embrace a little more of a future together.

Unfortunately, and still in true show fashion, you do have to go ahead and stamp a badge on this saying “it’s complicated.” They are not letting the world in on what is going on, even if Elizabeth North and Abby have already started to figure it out. Meanwhile, the President is divorcing Mellie, who even went to Cyrus at one point for help. He is still unemployed for the most part following what happened with Fitz.

Also, by the end of the episode, Olivia and Fitz had a pretty epic argument at the end of the hour about what was the case of the week: The death of a princess, which turned out to be even more complicated than it at first seemed. Rather than the Prince being help responsible, it was actually the Prince’s Royal mother who made sure that she was killed. Thanks to a shrewd move by Olivia, she managed to circumvent a confidentiality agreement and have the Prince force his mother out. This was great news for her as it meant a certain sort of justice was preserved; however, it angered Fitz since it would cause a change in the relationship.

We thought we’d be spending more time talking about this Royal mystery and Olivia’s dreams of keeping things going at a slow pace, but a certain former Vice-President Sally Langston is keeping that from happening. Thanks to some photos on her nightly news show, she made it more than clear that there is something going on between these newfound lovers. Good luck handling this one.

Also, Huck needs healing, and in order to find that he goes to … Jake? This should get interesting, just as most of the premiere was. Grade: B+.
