‘Fear the Walking Dead’ episode 4 reaction: On Travis and Madison’s many differences

fearWe’ve now made it four episodes into “Fear the Walking Dead” season 1, and we’ve already said that we consider somewhat of the direction lately a miss. We had some patience for the show’s slower place during the first couple of episodes, but at this point we expecting things to be a little more intense, or at least closer to what we are seeing from the flagship show. Maybe it is unfair to try to compare the two products, but at the same time it’s inevitable. How can you not cross-compare?

The big reveal that was there in episode 4 is that the National Guard, or at least based on how they’ve been presented, are rounding up some dangerous / sick people and executing them before they become a threat to the community. At the moment, it certainly feels like a number of familiar faces, including Nick, Liza, and Griselda, are at risk of something like this happening.

What’s going to happen moving forward? As executive producer Dave Erickson says to The Hollywood Reporter, you are going to continue to see Travis and Madison have a difference of opinion when it comes to how to properly handle the issue:

“One of things that’s interesting about this episode is the approach that Travis has to the guard and the approach that Madison has to the guard. Madison has a level of mistrust and Travis wants to believe and have faith. He wants to see some kind of a return and repair to civilization. By the end of the episode, they both know that’s not true. What will be interesting in episode five is how they go about trying to retrieve Griselda, Liza and Nick. We will see a couple of unique and very specific ways of collecting all their loved ones — and will see which approach works.”

Despite our concerns, we do think now that the stage is set for something really crazy and interesting over the course of the final two episodes this season, and we are going to get a great chance to see what becomes of these characters when they go about what is a pretty dangerous rescue mission.
