2015 Emmy ratings down significantly despite ‘Game of Thrones,’ Jon Hamm wins

Even though “Game of Thrones” and Jon Hamm pulled in some long-deserved prizes at the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night, they did little to actually help the show’s numbers. Then again, nobody had a crystal ball and could predict who the winners were, and therefore may have decided not to watch.

Despite being the biggest awards show for TV out there, the Emmys pulled only a solid-but-unspectacular 3.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic in the preliminary numbers on Fox. that is a drop from the 3.8 the show drew at first last year. Note that since we’re dealing with live programming and it aired earlier on the West Coast, the odds are high that these numbers could rise in the finals. Still, it’ll be hard to top the ratings from last year.

What we will praise the Emmys for as a whole last night were keeping things tight, keeping things light, and delivering a few surprises. Andy Samberg was funny without dragging, we enjoyed the bits from Ricky Gervais and Jimmy Kimmel, and the show actually ended after three hours unlike the Oscars, which goes on and on and on to the point where even dedicated fans start to get a little bit loopy.

For those wondering, Sunday Night Football on NBC drew an 8.5 rating, which goes to show you that more than twice the audience cares more about the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks than people congratulating each other on an awards show. That is one interesting caveat in comparing this year’s telecast to last year’s; that show aired on NBC, and it aired on a Monday in order to avoid NFL competition.
