ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 5 spoilers: Kerry Washington on Olivia, Fitz’s ‘complicated’ future

At the end of “Scandal” season 4, we saw Olivia Pope doing something that, at one point, did not look like it was going to get to happen: Olivia and Fitz finally got together! This is a big step forward in their relationship, with the primary reason for that being that this time around, it feels like Mellie is actually out of the table. This is a big difference from what we’ve seen in past seasons, where she has always still been around. While there was still hope for the two parties moving into the future, you did always know that Mellie was still there in the way. That made things difficult.

So is it really possible that Liv and the President have a happy 22 episodes? Kerry Washington was present for the Emmy red carpet show on E! today, and while there she made the following clear:

“It’s Shondaland. It’s complicated … If you saw the promo (which you can watch here), there’s a lot of things happening between sheets and stuff.”

We know that one of the big issues for the two characters could just be how public they choose to make what is going on. Having it out in the open, for example, could be a big relief in that they don’t have to be completely undercover with everything anymore. However, at the same time there are other concerns. For example, will either one of them find the relationship anywhere near as appealing when the whole secretive nature of it is gone?
