‘Gotham’ season 2 spoilers: ‘The Last Laugh’ brings more trouble with Jerome
We still don’t know for sure whether or not “Gotham” wants us to seriously think that Jerome is going to become the Joker or not. In a sense, we still hope that this is all some sort of trickery on their part. This is a show that has a tendency to unfortunately be so obvious and on-the-nose with many of their references, and giving you something that seems to be going one way, only for it to end in a very different manner, would be a nice way to introduce a little more doubt into what the series is doing.
Now that we’ve said this, let’s bring you the official synopsis for their upcoming October 5 episode “The Last Laugh” (via SpoilerTV), something that obviously feels like a big episode for the Jerome character:
“Gordon and Bullock track down a nemesis from the past, leading to a standoff between Jerome (guest-star Cameron Monaghan) and Gordon. Meanwhile, a magic show at the Gotham Children’s Hospital gala turns into a hostage situation.”
If we really wanted to start to get a little bit meta about this, we could claim that “The Last Laugh” is meant to be some sort of reference that this could be the end of the Jerome saga. We are curious about how much this character could really be used, given that Monaghan is not a series regular, and there are so many other villains that “Gotham” wants to play with.
Also, this is a show that wants to last for several years. What good would it do them to reveal so many of their secrets early?
