‘Zoo’ season 2: Should CBS renew first-year series?

CBS -

Tonight, CBS’ adaptation of the James Patterson novel “Zoo” ended in a way that is pretty terrible in the event that the network cancels it, with a mob of animals charging forward at the very moment the show went to black. That’s a pretty rough way to say goodbye to something that has been around for most of the summer.

Is there still hope, though, that the show does eventually see the light of day once more? We’d say that right now, the odds are probably 50-50 that CBS brings it back for a season 2. What is working very much for it is simply that it has a rich deal with Netflix much in the same way that “Under the Dome” did with Amazon. These offset to a certain extent lower ratings in the summer, and it leaves the network open to giving these summer experiments longer tries.

However, these experiments so far have not really worked out. We feel like part of the reason CBS went the Amazon route with “Under the Dome” and “Extant” was to see if they could get streamers to come to the show for a second season, and it didn’t happen. Maybe things will be a little bit different with Netflix, given that we feel like the service has a bigger audience, is easier to use, and this is the sort of show that could be binged really well.

While the ratings for season 1 were not great and the show received little buzz beyond the premiere, we do hope that we get to visit “Zoo” again next summer. We’re a staunch believer that every show with a long-form story deserves at least two chances, and this one does at least have some interesting story elements.
