‘Dancing with the Stars 21’ spotlight: Will Carlos PenaVega, Witney Carson score a big time win?

Carlos -

Earlier today in our “Dancing with the Stars” season 21 spotlight series, we took a look at a certain contestant in Alexa PenaVega who we think has a reasonably good chance at winning the competition. Now, we’re going to be taking a look at her husband, whose odds could be from our vantage point a little more up in the air. Who knows, though? Maybe there is a way we come out of this being surprised. Sometimes we have a hard time gauging contestants who play to a younger crowd, especially when their claim to fame is not something we’re that familiar with.

Without further ado, let’s try to explain his positives and negatives before laying down our final prediction.

Name – Carlos PenaVega (previously Carlos Pena)

Age – 26

Claim to fame – A star of the Nickelodeon series “Big Time Rush,” and also a part of the band of the same name. Carlos eventually went solo and took his career in a little more Latin direction. As we mentioned, he is also married to fellow contestant Alexa PenaVega, which gives this season a unique sort of competitive spirit.

Partner – Witney Carson. She won the show with Alfonso Ribeiro, so she does know what it takes to make it all the way to the end of the season. She’s also someone who can bring out the fun performer in him, and this could be a formidable pairing because of it.

Strengths – Carlos is young, probably used to moving around on stage, and he’s got an audience of mostly young people who know how to use the internet for voting and other things. As we mentioned with Alexa (notice the recurring theme here?), we think it is a positive that they both have each other to compete against this season. It ultimately gives the show that added wrinkle of intensity that it does not have with some others.

Weaknesses – If this was a year or two ago and Big Time Rush was more at its peak, we figure that his base would be even stronger than it is right now. We’re a little concerned that older viewers will have no idea who he is, and that he could sort of blend in with all of the other male musicians / performers taking part this season.

Prediction – As of right now, we’re saying that Carlos will probably be beaten by his wife. He’s probably going to be a good dancer, but we’re a little concerned about the consistent voting block that you do need to be a huge force to be reckoned with on this show.
