‘Downton Abbey’ season 6: Michelle Dockery on what Mary is striving for

There is still more than a week to go before “Downton Abbey” officially begins with some new episodes on ITV, but it is never too early to start sharing some scoop! What we have for you right now is not necessarily anything too specific via series star Michelle Dockery, but we still think it is welcome, valuable information that gives you some more insight into just where her head is at.

Speaking per the Radio Times, Dockery makes it fairly clear that while romance is something that her character would expect, her journey moving forward is really more about inner happiness than anything that could come in her direction from the outside:

“Mary is just trying to find happiness within herself — it’s not just about finding the right man … She goes through quite an interesting time in her life in this series. She just wants to be content, I think, and happy. She’s always just chasing the happy.” 

At this particular point in time, we do feel like the show has done a very good job of demonstrating just how Mary is looking for something more than just a relationship. She’s already had two very noteworthy suitors in Charles Blake and Tony Gillingham in the series, but she made the decision to turn them both down in the end. She is chasing something far more complicated than the adoration of someone, and while we think filling the romantic void is something that the show will explore with this character, it is not the only thing. We’ll have more news on this soon enough.
