‘The X Factor’ UK and the impact of scouting talent
For the most part, we enjoy talking about “The X Factor” UK and mocking the majority of the rumors posted by the British tabloids, mostly because we do think that they do a very good job at blowing things massively out of proportion almost day in and day out.
Even with this all being said, there is a new report that has surfaced today that we find personally to be even more shocking than almost anything that has been said previously. According to a new report from the Daily Star, only two out of the 24 acts who made it to judges’ house (we are not going to say who they are for the sake of preserving the competition) apparently made it onto the show without being scouted by producers. While these “scouted” acts do not get any sort of special privilege in front of the judges or anything, it does show, if the data is right, that the majority of the singing you are seeing now on the show are not coming in with the old “I’m a nobody” story that has been enforced for so many years now.
The question that you should be asking yourselves as a result of this is whether or not this is a good thing for the competition, and we would argue that for the most part, it’s hard to be that upset over it. This is mostly an indication of just where we are with the talent pool at this point. If there weren’t singers who were scouted, the tabloids would probably be saying that the majority of the talent just isn’t good enough. Many regular auditioners have done so before, and many just do not have the talent to make it to the live shows. You are dealing with a country that has two singing shows plus “Britain’s Got Talent,” and there are not enough new singers to compensate for the rate at which these are produced.
Ultimately, we really don’t care if someone was signed to a record label or had 10 million YouTube hits before the show. As long as they have a level playing field at the auditions, we’re happy.
