‘Gotham’ season 2, episode 1 video: Jim Gordon and the Penguin reconvene
It’s nice to see that “Gotham” is keeping one tradition alive that the show first established back in the first season: Having Fox release a shocking amount of sneak peeks for certain episodes before they air. By the time this premiere episode actually airs on Monday, September 21, it’s possible that we will have already seen a good quarter of the episode in advance … not that we are complaining or anything, but they definitely don’t hold much back.
The preview below was first shared by Entertainment Weekly, and it features a pretty tense conversation between Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor). Gordon clearly thinks that the Penguin owes him a favor, which is something that he seems to firmly disagree with in return. In his own mind, he feels like the two are square, and there’s really not anything else that he owes Gordon at this point, so if Gordon wants a favor, he will have to give Penguin something in return.
In the end, Gordon asks for the favor (to help get the current commissioner out, and in turn help him get his job back), and in turn Oswald wants his help dealing with a certain “business associate.” It’s a fun scene, and the more we have interactions like this between these two characters, the happier we’re going to be since they have a creepy chemistry on screen together. We know that Gordon is inherently a good guy, but if anyone’s going to make him walk the edge between good and evil, it’s Penguin. He has a way of making Gordon think that doing something evil for the sake of good is a great idea, and it rarely is.
Now, let’s point out what we really don’t like: Oswald saying that he likes having Selina around because it’s like “having a cat around the house.” We were so hoping we were done with the lazy look-we’re-being-cute Batman references this season; the show is so good that these cheapen what they’re trying to do. Mostly we hope that they figure out something for Selina to do and if not, then retire her for now along with Poison Ivy which we feel they’ve already mucked around with too much.
