‘The Last Ship’ season 3: Show boss on Rachel’s status, early plans

Last Ship -Obviously, we should start this particular article on “The Last Ship” with a pretty big SPOILER warning if you did not watch the finale. There is going to be plenty of discussion all about what happened below!

If you are still with us, let’s talk a little bit about what happened, mostly through the lens of the final event: Rachel being shot by Curtis, who did the deed right in the middle of a celebration by crew members of the Nathan James and President Michener, who finally thought they were getting the world back together. This one moment is going to serve as a foundation for what could be an insane season 3, since there are so many questions about whether or not Curtis was acting completely on his own, and whether or not Rachel is going to make it through.

Just in case you were wondering, the show’s executive producers are not interested in tipping the scales one way or another in regards to Dr. Scott’s fate or the shooter’s intent. Here is what Steven Kane for now had to say in a postmortem with The Hollywood Reporter:

“It was purposely ambiguous. … We like the idea of showing that the show’s not over, that there’s still threats out there. Otherwise, it felt like, “Well, I guess they got the cure. Why keep watching?” It’s part of the structure.”

In terms of general ideas for the third season, one of the real things you can anticipate is further expansion one way or another. This is a huge world, and while a disease did wipe out a huge chunk of the human population, there is still the technology and the means for Chandler and his crew to explore. We’ll get to see more of that next summer on TNT.
