‘The Daily Show with Trevor Noah’ books ‘Awkward’ actress, Roy Wood Jr., more as correspondents
When “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” premieres on Comedy Central September 28, our new host is going to have plenty of compliments insofar as his group of correspondents goes.
We start here with the news that the show has signed on Roy Wood Jr., a comic we’re actually familiar with already. He’s a funny guy already, and he is probably the most old-school out of anyone that the show has. This is good, especially since he will bring some of his own perspective being from Alabama. Up-and-coming comedian Ronny Chieng is also on the roster, and he is admittedly the new person we know the least about.
Now, let’s turn to the biggest surprise is Desi Lydic. She’s already an established actress, known for playing Jenna’s flighty guidance counselor Val on MTV’s “Awkward.” So to see her popping up on this show now is somewhat of a surprise, though we do find her very funny.
These three join a roster that includes Jon Stewart’s entire correspondent panel at the time of his “Daily Show” ending: Jordan Klepper, Hasan Minhaj, Jessica Williams, Lewis Black, John Hodgman, Al Madrigal, Aasif Mandvi, and Kristen Schaal. That may seem like a ton of people, but be cognizant for a minute here that the majority of these people are only recurring and show up for little spots here and there. Klepper, Williams, and Minhaj were the three that did most of the heavy lifting near the end of Stewart’s run on the show.
In a statement, Noah said he’s “so excited to welcome these new members of the ‘Daily Show’ team,” and that he now gets “to share my stress with other new people.”
