‘Doctor Who’ season 9 spoilers: Alex Kingston returning as River Song for Christmas Special

Doctor Who -For of those wanting to see River Song back on “Doctor Who,” wait no more: Alex Kingston will be back for the season 9 Christmas Special, which is going into production this month for the BBC. The network’s American counterpart released a teaser this morning, and it’s one that reveals a decent amount when it comes to how she will get to interact with Twelve (Peter Capaldi) for the first time:

“It’s Christmas Day in the future and the TARDIS is parked on a snowy village street, covered in icicles, awaiting its next adventure. Time traveller River Song meets her husband’s new incarnation, in the form of Peter Capaldi, for the first time this Christmas.”

The BBC is always tremendous in releasing statements any time they do huge castings like this, and we’re thrilled to be starting this off with the following from Kingston:

“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special … Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humor and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read-through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September?, why not!”

Meanwhile, Moffat (who did write this episode) added the following:

“Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who – and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song. The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time.”

Ultimately, we feel like this is going to be a whole lot of fun, though we do admittedly question already just where in the world Clara is during all of this. We’re not going to read too much into her omission in the synopsis for now, though, mostly because there wouldn’t be so much to hyping a meeting between her and River Song as there is with The Doctor.
