‘True Detective’ season 3: Three separate suggestions to change HBO show
Once again, we are sitting here on a Sunday, awaiting some sort of news regarding what a third season of “True Detective” could be. The problem at the moment is that there is no official confirmation yet that a season 3 is happening. HBO is keeping quiet, to a certain extent understandably so given that there is no real motivation for them to make something official before they figure out what they want to do.
With that being said, we do still think that something will happen with the series in one form or another. Therefore, the future is a subject worth discussing. If you look below, you can see a specific list of three suggestions that, in one combination or another, could put the show in a better position to succeed if and when another season is announced. The thing that it really needs to do reinvent itself, and create no expectations much like we had going into season 1.
Something more comedic – This is a show that really could use a shift in tone. We’re not saying that all of a sudden the show should be going for sight gags and balloon animals, but a funny line here and there would liven things up. This is up there with “The Leftovers” as the most serious show on TV, and it can be suffocating. Also, it really sets itself up to be ridiculed more than a show that has at least a few lines that are tongue-in-cheek.
Something international – Get out of America. Extend the definition of “detective.” Just present a story that looks and feels very different than the first two seasons. Interestingly, some of the scenes at the very end of season 2 were the show’s most interesting. We just did not feel that Vinci proved itself to be that compelling a setting.
No-name actors – It’s an interesting idea, but we feel like much of the buildup for season 2 was about finding stars that were draws on the level of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Why not bring in people who can get lost further in the roles? Then, for the first time really ever with this show, it becomes about the characters just as much as some of the people playing them.

Maybe a fractured story line between two detectives who never have any contact but chase the same serial killer during different times.
