‘Empire’ season 2 spoilers: Show boss on possible ‘guest-star’ concerns
Are there potentially too many people willing to sign on to do “Empire“? We understand that this is a concern that stems from having so many famous people come on the show. Obviously, it is great for ratings and great for headlines to get people like Mariah Carey and Kelly Rowland to stop by, but one of the inevitable concerns that go along with this is just that you start to get a situation where there are so many famous people, it starts to detract a little bit from the show itself.
Is this something that you should be worried about? Showrunner Ilene Chaiken insists that it is not going to overwhelm the show, telling TVLine in a recent interview that one of their top priorities anytime that they bring new characters onto the show is making sure that they find a way to somehow fit into the world:
“Don’t worry about the guest casting, because Empire is about the Lyon family and they’re always going to be the more important thing. Our rule for ourselves, even though all of these fabulous people are being presented to us on these lovely silver platters, is that we’re going to tell our stories, and if [guest stars] fit into our stories, fantastic. “So-and-so wants to be on Empire, and we’ve got this story, and she would be great as this character.” Every once in a while, we might spend a bit of time figuring out what we can do with a certain person who really wants to be on the show, but if it doesn’t fit, we don’t do it.”
That’s a little bit of a relief, and while we admit to having some concerns at one point about the show really trying to pull off a little too much in this department, we’re really not as worried about it as we once were. The big difference is that we have a longer season this time around, and that means more opportunities to work some of these guest stars into the show.
