‘Empire’ season 2 spoilers: First look at Kelly Rowland’s flashback role

If you have been following “Empire” for a little while now, you probably already heard the news that Kelly Rowland is coming aboard the series! The former member of Destiny’s Child will be appearing early on in the second season, and specifically will be playing a part that is significant to the character of Lucious Lyon: His mother, albeit in flashback form. The photo above comes via TVInsider, and it is our first real look at the character since the casting was announced.

Rowland said per the publication the following about getting to be a part of “Empire,” which has quickly become one of the biggest scripted hits on television:

“Through watching Leah, we learn more about Lucious’s past … I am an absolute fan of the show. It was the most exciting thing to work with all of these masterminds.”

While one of the downsides to playing a flashback role is that there is only so much you can really do, there are also some distinct advantages to go along with that. For example, one thing in particular that you have to look forward to is that there are opportunities for you to come back at almost any time, given that there are always storytelling possibilities with a character like this, especially since we have a hard time seeing the character of Lucious going anywhere in the near future. He has been so significant on the show since the very beginning, and he will start season 2 behind bars.
