‘Mr. Robot’ finale spoilers: Creator sets up possible cliffhanger, early season 2 hopes
There’s no questioning to us that “Mr. Robot” has been a revelation for USA. This is arguably their biggest hit since “Suits” first premiered, and an incredible look not just into the world of hacking, but someone who is also emotionally isolated and unreliable even to the point where we feel left in the dark by much of what he says.
Wednesday night, the season 1 finale of the series will air at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time, and we know that one of the most important elements of this episode is going to be whether or not Elliot and Tyrell can work together, and if we can forge a larger understanding as to where Elliot’s head is actually at. There will be some answers, but also still plenty of questions. In setting up some of what will be coming in the finale and in season 2, show creator Sam Esmail said the following to Entertainment Weekly:
“… [The] thing about how I wanted to end this season was that I wanted to set up the larger story of Elliot’s journey. So that’s where we’re ending. A lot of things happen in these episodes that are going to give people who are following the show a lot to process and a lot to rethink and a lot to figure out. I think what I wanted ultimately was the experience coming into season 2 to be, ‘Okay, now I’ve got everything’ … We essentially took the whole season to do that, and now, going into season 2, you’ll know — you’ll know what relationship we’re going to be focused on, and what ultimately the dynamic of the series moving forward will be. So that’s where I want audiences to be by the end of the season.”
Luckily, the show had a lot of means to pull of this plan. The series was ordered for a second season right around the time that it premiered, and they may have got some reassurances from the network even before that about their future.
