‘Game of Thrones’ season 6 will (shockingly) not film in Croatia

LogoWell, this is officially set to be filed under “things we did not see coming” for “Game of Thrones” season 6. For years, Croatia and in particular Dubrovnik have been the lifeblood of the HBO series. The city has become a tourist destination thanks to it being King’s Landing, and some of the best scenes in the history of the show were filmed there. In recent years, another city has doubled for Meereen.

So to hear the news that the show is not coming back to the European country next season is stunning. This news was confirmed per Winter is Coming in a new statement via HBO:

“We can confirm that based on story and location needs, Game of Thrones will not be shooting in Croatia for season 6.  The question of whether the production will return to Croatia in the future will be decided once additional seasons are officially set by HBO.  At that time, the production, along with HBO, will assess their location needs based on the scripts and storylines. HBO remains grateful to the HAVC and the Croatian crew for all of their continued support.”

We imagine that King’s Landing and more than likely Meereen will still have a role to play in season 6, but they could simply use location footage and material from the interior sets in Northern Ireland if they really want to; or, they can find another location that serves as a stand-in.

There are several reasons why HBO could want to drift from Dubrovnik. Maybe one is cost-related, or maybe another is strictly trying to be more under-the-radar with production. It has become a zoo at times trying to film in public places due to increasing popularity; the crowds were huge for the infamous Cersei Lannister scene at the end of season 5, and when you consider that only the cast, crew, and George R.R. Martin know the story from here, the spoiler-hounds will likely be out in full force.
