‘Law & Order: SVU’ season 17: When do Mariska Hargitay, cast resume filming?
For all of those wondering when “Law & Order: SVU” will be back in business, we come bearing official word from two of the people who have been involved for well over a decade.
Friday marks the first day of filming! This was confirmed first and foremost in a post on Twitter from star Ice-T, and Mariska Hargitay also showed a picture of herself holding up one of the scripts. In case you are thinking to yourself “how are they starting so late when every other show has been filming for a while?,” the answer is that “SVU” does things a little differently. They tend to bank at least an episode or two in the spring before the wrap filming on the previous season, and then they take some more time in the summer. It’s hard to know for sure why they opt to do things this way, though our favorite guess is that it frees them up from having to be outside as much in July and August (the hottest months of the year in New York City).
“SVU” is going to premiere with a two-hour episode on September 23, one that will have a few ripped-from-the-headlines moments. This is going to be a very different season structurally, given that with Nick Amaro no longer around, we imagine that Rollins and Carisi are each going to play much more of a role than they did in season 16. That’s not to diminish what they did last season, but instead make it even clearer that these are people you will get to know even better.

If Rollins(especially Rollins) and Carisi aren’t taking up a lot of story time in the show this season, it means that the show is coming to an end or every writer on the show should be fired. The cast is down to 5 regulars. The payroll has been cut for 5 straight seasons. Kelli Giddish will probably miss 4-5 episodes because of her pregnancy, and ICE-T and Peter Scanavino may miss at least 2 episodes each. What kind of ratings can be expected from this show with Regulars missing and going head to head with EMPIRE? Warren Leight is leaving after this season. Who is going to be the new show runner? Does Mariska want to work with a new show runner? Who will NBC bring in to supplement Kelli, ICE-T, etc. if Mariska leaves? Will NBC even give them the chance? Stay Tuned.
