‘Arrow’ season 4 spoilers: Showrunner on expected Oliver – Diggle tension

Diggle

The October 7 premiere of “Arrow” season 4 is not too far into the future, and when we get there we know that there are a pretty wide array of stories that the show producers are going to need to pay off. For example, what do you with a story similar to the one that John Diggle is dealing with? This is a guy who is going to continue to work with Oliver Queen, but at the same time they have what is now a long-standing problem that traces back from how Oliver both used his family as bait, and also trusted Malcolm Merlyn of all people before him.

Let’s make it clear now that this is not something that the show plans on glossing over. Based on what executive producer Wendy Mericle had to say on the subject to Collider, this is something that will remain an integral part of the story for at least the early going as these two try to figure out if they can get on the same page together:

“Dig has a huge bone to pick with Oliver when they see each other again, at the top of Season 4. We’re gonna work that out. It’s not gonna be easy. With what happened to Dig’s family, it’s really tough to buy that back, and Oliver is not gonna to be able to. Obviously, they can’t be mad at each other forever, or what are we doing? But also, in the intervening months while Oliver has been gone, Dig has, more or less, been leading the team. It’s a little bit more democratic, Speedy and Black Canary are both super bad-ass and kicking butt. He’s not happy, when he and Oliver meet again. It’s not an open-armed, “Hey, buddy, all is forgiven,” reunion.”

Part of the other challenge in figuring out how to tell this story comes in really establishing what you want the tone of the upcoming season to be. By that, what we mostly mean here is that for the third season, we had a much more grim story courtesy of what we were seeing with Ra’s al Ghul. We know that Oliver and Felicity are going to be in a good place, and you’d like to see him find that same sort of balance with one of his closest friends.
