‘Arrow’ season 4 spoilers: Laurel Lance’s new secret-identity struggles

Black CanaryHow does someone react to being a hero? For Laurel Lance on “Arrow” season 4, this is going to be one of many questions that she has to tackle. For the first time, she is going to start to reconcile that this is her life, and she has to juggle all of her responsibilities in a way she really hasn’t before. Sure, we know that she was still working while fighting crime on the third season, but we really did not get to see a whole lot of it.

One thing that executive producer Wendy Mericle makes very clear to TVLine is that in terms of fighting crime, we’re not going to see the Black Canary anymore who is not particularly great at her job. The months without Oliver around will have served as great preparation, and she’s more of a fully-fledged heroine than she was while he was still in Starling City.

Also, Mericle adds that she’s going to start to see more first-hand just what Oliver has been going through for years when it comes to keeping part of her life a secret:

“She has a secret identity; how does she grapple with that? And she’s an ADA, so what kind of impact is that going to have on her decisions as Black Canary — and vice versa?”

One thing that we have absolutely loved when it comes to the Laurel story as of late is that the writers have allowed this character to be strong without just throwing another love interest at her, and we’re now at the point where if it ever happens again, it will at least not feel like it is being forced onto the character. We like this independent character, and we’re enjoying watching her and Katie Cassidy’s work more now than we ever have before on the series.
